Coming to an end..
December 15, 2008After 4 exciting weeks I am finally finished my three-week-block and I had a ball with my kids! The students made my transition from teaching a few subjects to a full loadvery easy. They are such great kids! Nearing the end of my time at Assiniboia Park Elementary School I’m realizing that I actually have to leave in 4 days.. I feel I’ve really made a connection with my kids and they have definitely made a difference in my life.
Throughout my block I can honestly say that I saw growth from all of the students. The kids were engaged in oral storytelling projects and presentations with lots of group work. They created dramas, performed puppet shows, presented smart board activities, and wrote songs to retell First Nation’s legends. It was an incredible experience that I am so happy I was able to share with my students. They also completed a research assignment where they became “experts” on a Saskatchewan town or city. Once their research was complete they created postcards telling family members about their “visits” to cool Saskatchewan communities. We learned about cells in science class by using a virtual electron microscope on the smart board. We dragged and dropped petri dishes under the microscope and were able to see the differences between plant and animal cells. These are just a few of the cool activities we completed over the last month.
When my block was over I gradually handed subjects back over to my co-operating teacher and I was sad to do so! This, however, gave me the opportunity to visit other classrooms in our school and our community. I went to the Weyburn Comprehensive High School where they have a wonderful Special Ed. program. I was able to go grocery shopping, plan meals, and help students practice some essential life skills all in one morning!
I also went to Souris Elementary School to a grade 5 classroom where a friend of mine is interning. While both schools are in the same community our classrooms are vastly different. Being in another school allowed me to see different needs of the students, general rules and routines, and it honestly felt like a different atmosphere while I was there.
Just this morning I had the pleasure of joining our grade 1 class for Mrs. Claus Day! The students rotated through eight stations with the help of some parent volunteers. Some of the stations were: creating a personalized story online, making an elf hat, making delicious cookies and reindeer food, and (my favourite) the gingerbread houses! It got messy at times, but it was a lot of fun! One thing I realized is that the diversity of our small city definitely shines through when you visit different classrooms and different schools.
As my internship comes to an end I can honestly say that it has been a very positive experience for me. I looked forward to going to school each morning. While I had some personal turmoil, I was surrounded by a wonderful and supportive staff and great friends and family. I was able to hang my worries on the door as I entered the classroom each day and focus on my time with the students.
I am exciting to be looking for job opportunities. I can actually have my own classroom! I am discovering the kind of teacher I want to be. Now real life begins..
I will be a 21st Century Teacher!
